Pakistan plans to add at least two dozen nuclear-capable

ISLAMABAD: 
Pakistan plans to add at least two dozen nuclear-capable, short-range missiles to its swelling arsenal this year, sources said in a revelation that indicates a growing ‘urge’ in the powerful security establishment to seek ‘strategic parity in the region’.

If the government successfully achieves its target, this would be the highest number of missiles Pakistan had ever produced in a year.

These air-to-air and surface-to-air missiles would be able to hit a target at a distance between 700 to 1,000 kilometres, which would put nearly all major Indian cities within their range.

Sources said the plan was in line with Pakistan’s official policy of having what is rhetorically called ‘maintaining a minimum deterrence’ especially against India.

They added that the Strategic Plans Division (SPD) — a high powered body that oversees Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal — was also supervising the production of new missiles.

The SPD works under the National Commands Authority (NCA) that is headed by the prime minister and has all services chiefs as its members.

Sources said it was in one of the recent NCA meetings that SPD briefed the authority about the plan that envisaged the production of highest number of missiles ever in a year.

The disclosure comes on the heels of reports earlier in the year that Pakistan was rapidly adding to its nuclear arsenal and the number of its warheads might have surpassed France.

Officials in Islamabad have denied those reports but insiders said Pakistan has been ‘watching closely with concern’ India’s increasing nuclear cooperation with the United States and France.

“That is the benchmark… if we see something happening in India on this front, naturally we react and we have to,” said one official.

Drones inducted into Pak Navy fleet

KARACHI: Pakistan Navy has inducted the first squadron of drones into its fleet, Geo News reported.

Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Noman Bashir was the chief guest in the induction ceremony.

During the ceremony he said the drones would increase the operational capabilities of the Navy. The spokesman for the Navy added that the drones are equipped with sensors and will be used in coastal areas.

FBI arrests Pakistani agent for making political contributions in US

Law enforcement sources say the FBI has arrested an agent of Pakistan's official state intelligence service, accusing him of making thousands of dollars in political contributions in the United States without disclosing his connections to the Pakistani government.

Syed Ghulam Fai will appear in federal court this afternoon in Alexandria, Virginia.  He's not charged with being a spy. But he is charged with being an unregistered agent or lobbyist of the Pakistani government.

He's the exective director of a group called the Kashmiri American Council, the sources say, and he has given tens of thousands of dollars to congressional candidates and party organizations. U.S. officials say there's no reason to believe that members of Congress or other organizations that received his contributions were aware of his government connections.

A call to the Kashmiri American Council's office in Washington went unanswered this morning.

Pakistani scientist wins award in India

Karachi: Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) has awarded TWAS Regional Prize for young scientist to a female Pakistani scientist of Karachi University (KU), namely Dr Sammer Yousuf.

The award was given during the AFRO-ASIA Workshop on Advanced Topics in Chemistry, held on June 13 to 17, 2011 at TWAS Regional Office for Central and South Asia (TWAS-ROCASSA) at Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore, India. Dr. Yousuf was selected for this honor from over 30 oral presentations of scientists of 10 regional countries.

Dr Yousuf as an Assistant Professor is working at the HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry, International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences, Karachi University, according to ICCBS spokesman. She is among very few chemists of Pakistan working on Single-Crystal X-Ray Diffraction technique.

KU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddqui, former Chairman of Higher Education Commission Prof Dr Atta-ur-Rehman and Director ICCBS Prof Dr M Iqbal Choudhary have congratulated Dr Yousuf on her achievement.

Promoting Pakistan: The long ride home

LAHORE:  It’s well documented how foreign media views and stereotypes Pakistan. For the youth, paranoia has been created which has changed perceptions of Pakistan. There have been various initiatives to challenge and change these stigmas.

Till now, nobody had heard of  24-year old Moin Khan but suddenly with the viral impact of Facebook and his website, his popularity has seen a sudden rise as he started a 28,000 mile solo motorcycle journey from San Francisco, California to his hometown Lahore.
For several years, Khan had lived in Bay area, California, going to school at San Francisco State University where he studied International Business while also doing various part-time jobs. The news he would hear about his home country was rarely positive and was quite often depressing. From here, Khan developed the idea to do something positive for his country and help change the perception of Pakistan.
“You never really hear any good news about Pakistan,” remarks Khan who is currently spending the night in Vancouver. “I wondered how I could play a part in improving the image of Pakistanis and I thought this great adventure gave me the opportunity to break stereotypes and tell people that Pakistan isn’t really all that bad.”
For this reason, the trip back to his hometown has been largely unplanned. He will be on the road for four to five months, attempting to interact with people and, hopefully, promote Pakistan. “I have no idea where I’ll be staying during the nights, I have some camping gear but no idea where the campgrounds are,” says Khan. “I am attempting to do this old-school style without the use of global positioning system (GPS) because this will give me a chance to talk to strangers for directions.”
The idea may seem far-fetched but Khan does have a rough understanding of the countries he will pass in traveling across the globe. According to his website and Facebook page, Khan plans on riding through Germany, Switzerland, France, Spain, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. He then plans on cruising through Turkey, Iran, thus entering Pakistan and then heading home to Lahore.
The bike he is using for the trip is a Honda CBR 600 F4i sport bike, which has been custom fitted with a touring rack but few have tried to go such long distances across so many countries.
According to his cousin, Ali Khan, an IT professional in the US, the response to the initiative thus far has been unique and Moin’s Facebook page has gained over a thousand followers in the last couple of days. He added that there was no confirmed date of when he would be arriving in Pakistan but there was already talk of people receiving him when he entered the country.
“He had thought of the idea around three years ago and he has always said that whatever small role one can play by speaking to one person at a time, is a form of making a difference,” said Ali. “The interesting thing is that a lot of this is uncoordinated, for instance when he was in Portland a guy from his online bikers forum gave him a place to stay for the night but in other cases its largely hotels or sleeping bags.”
In the end, Khan comes across surely as a modern-day adventurer or thrill-seeker who has, as his website specifies, ‘a different agenda’. For him, the journey will help decrease the hole in people’s knowledge about Pakistan.

"Spirit of the Swat" & A The World Record,

PESHAWAR: Three UK-based parachuters attempted to a world record by jumping off a height of 10,000 feet with a Pakistani flag weighing 100 kilogrammes in the 45-day festival “Spirit of the Swat”, Express News reported Saturday.

The festival is underway in the district of Kabal of Swat under the patronage of Pakistan Army.
Speaking to Express News, one of the parachuters said that he “believed” that they had set the world record of jumping with the “largest” flag.

A total of 12 teams are participating in 15 disciplines of various field and court games, whereas, a marathon is also being organized in the festival by Atheltics Federation of Pakistan (AFOP).

Along with the local athletes of Swat, participants of all 14 affiliated units of AFOP will also take part in the event.

The games are scheduled to conclude on July 23.

Kill all politicians, Edhi demands of Kayani

 

KARACHI -  Eminent social worker Abdul Sattar Edhi has demanded Chief of Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Pervez Kayani to take over the government and bring a Burma-like revolution by killing all political personalities in the country so the new generation could step into politics. Addressing a press conference at the Karachi Press Club on Saturday on the issue of terrorism in Karachi, Edhi suggested Kayani take over only for three months because every general who comes into power does not fee like leaving. Edhi said that democracy is in the nature of human beings.
He said, “Political parties are in the opposition or in power, both of which are sides of the same coin. They have been involved in killing thousands of citizens.” He also said that according to the government, 1.7 million capitalists are tax thieves. “All tax thieves and zakat thieves live freely in the country. All killers are free, 95 percent of Pakistanis are living in miserable conditions,” he added.
He further said that he has no ambition to come into politics or power, but he would continue to serve the people of Pakistan.

Pak Navy making fast attack craft missile boats

KARACHI: Pakistan Navy has started constructing missile boat in the Karachi Shipyard, our sources reported.

The missile boat would be equipped with ant-surface missile, automatic gun and weapon system.

Secretary defence production, Lt. General Shahid Iqbal, attending the keel laying ceremony for the construction of missile boat as guest of honour, expressed his thanks to the Karachi Shipyard and added that it would help build up the defence capability of Pakistan Navy.

Following the handing over of two small tanker cum utility ships and launching of 22p-f frigate, these missile boats with the cooperation of China are being built in the Karachi Shipyard.

Pakistan: Karachi violence 'kills 39' in three days

At least 39 people have been killed in three days of violence between rival political groups in the Pakistani city of Karachi, security officials say.

The authorities said they had detained several suspects and were trying to take control of situation.

The killings started on Tuesday evening in western neighbourhoods of Karachi.

The city is plagued by extortion rackets, mafia-run land-grabs and turf wars waged by armed groups linked to rival political parties.

Residents say they are terrified to go out as intense gunfire is still going on.

In many households, food stocks are running low.

One woman told the BBC there was no milk or bread left in her house to feed the family.

The violence so far appears largely restricted to certain areas, but it has on occasion spilled over into other parts of the city.

In one case, armed men on motorbikes stopped a mini-bus and shot dead five passengers.

In another, a five year old girl died when she was caught in the crossfire between rival groups. Karachi is not only Pakistan's main port city, but also a major industrial and commercial centre.

There are fears that with last week's resignation from the government of Karachi's main political party -the MQM - increased violence and instability could bring Pakistan's economic capital to a standstill

Reaction is coming in to the announcement that Sunday's issue of the News of the World will be the last edition of the paper.

It follows claims the paper authorised hacking into mobile phones including those of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler and the families of 7/7 bombing victims.
