Pakistani wins Oscar of Science and Technology world

KARACHI:  Pakistani Athar Osama, who dreams of reviving the Golden Age of Islamic Science, has won an award at an event considered to be the Oscars of Science and Technology on Wednesday night at the UN Building, New York.

Osama has won the World Technology Network (WTN) award for Science and Innovation Media and Journalism from a breathtakingly talented group of people which included USAID Science Adviser Alex Dehgan.

“I feel so blessed to be recognised and honoured by the WTN among the elite of world’s science and technology leaders that will create the world of the future,” an excited Athar told The Express Tribune.
Osama – known for his pioneering work on introducing and popularising the ideas of science and innovation policy through journalism — visions to promote Muslim science through his online journal Muslim-Science.Com.

Osama has been writing extensively on important science and innovation policy themes since 1992, initially for leading English newspapers in Pakistan, and later in international general interest journals and online.
In his acceptance speech in front of an audience at a black-tie reception, he said “We all cannot hope to create a world that is more developed, better, and safer, if we exclude the 1.5 billion Muslims from the fruits of science and technology. Muslim-Science.Com is dedicated to make a contribution in that realm,” according to the released statement.

“It was immensely gratifying and exhilarating,” he added.

Osama received letters of support from COMSTECH Coordinator General Dr Attaur Rahman, Saudi Science Minister Dr Mohammed ibn Ibrahim Al-Suwaiyel and Science Adviser to Malaysian Prime Minister Dr AH Zarki. Athar believes these letters were a significant factor in him winning this award.

He termed the launch of website Muslim-Science.Com as just the beginning. “Our hope is to launch a series of very interesting and important signature initiatives alongside the web portal that will make critical contributions in areas of greatest weaknesses in the science and innovation eco-system in the Islamic World,” Athar added in his speech.

Pakistan had successfully test-fired a stealth cruise missile capable of carrying nuclear warheads on Friday.

ISLAMABAD, Oct 28 (APP): Pakistan on Friday conducted successful test fire of an indigenously developed multi-tube having stealth capabilities Cruise Missile Hatf-VII (Babur). Babur has a target range of 700 kms, said ISPR in a news release here. The missile test was conducted to validate the design parameters of the weapon system and a new Missile Launch Vehicle (MLV). “Babur Cruise Missile is low flying, terrain hugging missile with high maneuverability, pin-point accuracy and radar avoidance features. “It can carry both nuclear and conventional warheads and has stealth capabilities. “It also incorporates the most modern cruise missile technology of Terrain Contour Matching (TERCOM) and Digital Scene Matching and Area Co-relation (DSMAC).”

A special feature of Friday’s launch was the validation of a new multi-tube MLV during the test. The three tube MLV enhances manifold the targeting and deployment options in the conventional and nuclear modes. With its shoot-and-scoot capability, the MLV provides a major force multiplier effect for target employment and survivability.

The test was witnessed by Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Khalid Shahmeem Wynne, Director General Strategic Plans Division Lieutenant General ® Khalid Ahmed Kidwai, Commander Army Strategic Force Command, Lieutenant General Tariq Nadeem Gilani and Chairman National Engineering and Scientific Commission (NESCOM) Muhammad Irfan Burney, senior officers from the armed forces and strategic organizations, scientists and engineers.

Gaddafi raped with a knife before his death

The rebels who captured Moammar Khadafy visited a final humiliation on the brutal Libyan dictator while dragging him from a drainage pipe to his doom - they tortured him with a knife, disturbing new footage revealed Monday.

Graphic footage released Monday by GlobalPost.com shows a rebel jabbing a helpless Khadafy in the backside with what appears to be a U.S.-made combat knife called a BK&T - and which the Libyans called a "Bicketti."
Khadafy, who used rape to terrorize political opponents, appears bloodied and terrified. And screams in Arabic can be heard amid the vengeful cries of the rebels.

CIA’s Soldiers with six Legs spread Dengue in Af-Pak – Detailed Analysis, History of Dengue Virus

July 13, 2010: Officials in Florida released the findings of a Centers for Disease Control (CDC) study conducted recently in the Key West area revealing that about 10 percent of the coastal town’s population are infected with the dengue fever virus even inside U.S.Z.
While the July 13 release made little mention of it, theCDC study was provoked by an earlier 2009 report that a woman in New York State, who had returned from a Florida Keys’ visit, had contracted dengue fever. Within a few weeks of this initial report, two additional cases were discovered in people who had returned from Key West. Over the next three months of 2009, an additional 26 cases were identified, all tied to visits to the town. Now for the last 5 years, millions of infected mosquitoes are being deliberately unleashed in the South Asian region in order to weaken the afghan resistance against U.S.Z. in Afghanistan.

Sunnah of Applying Surma

To apply Surma is a blessed Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). When he would go to sleep at night he would apply Surma in his blessed eyes. We should also try to practice this Sunnah as we will gain the reward and benefit in following the Sunnah and the worldly benefits too.
Best type of Surma

'Abd-Allah Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that, 'The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said that, ''among the best types of collyrium you use is ithmad, it clears the vision and makes the hair sprout.'

When to put Surma on
Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) has related that, 'The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) had a collyrium container out of which he applied collyrium every night, in each eye three times.'
It is the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) to apply Surma when going to sleep. It stays in the eyes for longer and makes it more effective.

Benefit of Surma
Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) has related that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said that, 'Apply antimony regularly, as it clears the sight, makes the eye lashes grow and is the best of things beautifying the eyes.'

Pakistan to get sponsorship for UDRS

Pepsi has agreed to sponsor the UDRS, making Pakistan the first country internationally to get sponsorship for the system.

ISLAMABAD: The Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS)  will be used during Pakistan’s tour of the UAE in which they will play series with England and Sri Lanka, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced.
Pepsi has agreed to sponsor the system for both the series in the UAE, making the PCB the first international cricket board to get sponsorship for the UDRS.
“PCB is pleased to be taking a leading role in the use of the ICC recommended technologies for International Cricket. We hope that other partner boards will follow the example of the PCB and use the Umpire Review system in their respective future series,” Chief Coordinating Officer Subhan Ahmad said in a statement.
“The use of the UDRS  will bring value to our forthcoming series. We thank our sponsors Pepsi for once again supporting Pakistan Cricket and the PCB in its many endeavors,” he added.
Commenting on the development General Manager of the ICC, David Richardson, said that the PCB’s initiative was a welcome step.
“We believe that using the Decision Review System will result in getting more umpire decisions correct and we accordingly welcome the PCB’s initiatives and that of its sponsors in securing its use in the upcoming series.”
“The PCB has always led the way in supporting innovations and it is much appreciated,” he added.

Japanese scientist unveils ‘thinking’ robot

TOKYO: Robots that learn from experience and can solve novel problems — just like humans — sound like science fiction.

But a Japanese reasearcher is working on making them science fact, with machines that can teach themselves to perform tasks they have not been programmed to do, using objects they have never seen before.
In a world first, Osamu Hasegawa, associate professor at the Tokyo Insitute of Technology, has developed a system that allows robots to look around their environment and do research on the Internet, enabling them to “think” how best to solve a problem.
“Most existing robots are good at processing and performing the tasks they are pre-programmed to do, but they know little about the ‘real world’ where we humans live,” he told

“So our project is an attempt to build a bridge between robots and that real world,” he said.
The Self-Organizing Incremental Neural Network, or “SOINN”, is an algorithm that allows robots to use their knowledge — what they already know — to infer how to complete tasks they have been told to do.
SOINN examines the environment to gather the data it needs to organise the information it has been given into a coherent set of instructions.
Tell a SOINN-powered machine that it should, for example: “Serve water”.
In a labratory demonstration, the machine begins to break down the task into a series of skills that it has been taught: holding a cup, holding a bottle, pouring water from a bottle, placing a cup down.
Without special programmes for water-serving, the robot works out the order of the actions required to complete the task.
The SOINN machine asks for help when facing a task beyond its ability and crucially, stores the information it learns for use in a future task.
In a separate experiment, SOINN is used to power machines to search the Internet for information on what something looks like, or what a particular word might mean.
Hasegawa’s team is trying to merge these abilities and create a machine that can work out how to perform a given task through online research.
“In the future, we believe it will be able to ask a computer in England how to brew a cup of tea and perform the task in Japan,” he said.
Like humans, the system can also filter out “noise” or insignificant information that might confuse other robots.
The process is similar to how people can carry on a conversation with a travelling companion on a train and ignore those around them, or can identify an object under different lighting and from various angles, Hasegawa said.
“Human brains do this so well automatically and smoothly so we don’t realise that we are even doing this,” he said.
Similarly, the machine is able to filter out irrelevant results it finds on the web.
“There is a huge amount of information available on the Internet, but at present, only humans are making use of such information,” he said.
“This robot can connect its brain directly to the Internet,” he said.
Hasegawa hopes SOINN might one day be put to practical use, for example controlling traffic lights to ease traffic jams by organically analysing data from public monitors and accident reports.
He also points to possible uses in earthquake detection systems where a SOINN-equipped machine might be able to aggregate data from numerous sensors located across Japan and identify movements that might prove significant.
In a domestic setting, a robot that could learn could prove invaluable to a busy household.
“We might ask a robot to bring soy sauce to the dinner table. It might browse the Internet to learn what soy sauce is and identify it in the kitchen,” said Hasegawa.
But, cautions the professor, there are reasons to be careful about robots that can learn.
What kinds of tasks should we allow computers to perform? And is it possible that they might turn against us, like in the apocalyptic vision of Stanley Kubrick’s film “2001: A Space Odyssey”.
“A kitchen knife is a useful thing. But it can also become a weapon,” he said.
While Hasegawa and his team have only benign intentions for their invention, he wants people to be aware of its moral limits.
“We are hoping that a variety of people will discuss this technology, when to use it, when not to use it.
“Technology is advancing at an enormous speed,” he said.
“I want people to know we already have this kind of technology. We want people with different backgrounds and in different fields to discuss how it should be used, while it is still in its infancy.”

Sleepers Of The Cave

Sleepers as described in Christian literature:  They were few youths.  When the Emperor Decius heard of their change of faith, he summoned them and questioned them about their new religion.  In spite of knowing that the Emperor was deadly against the followers of the Christ, they frankly admitted before him that their Lord is the Lord of the earth of and heavens, and that they recognized none else as Deity for if they did so, they would be committing a grave sin.  The Emperor became furious to hear this, and warned that he would have them killed, but then considering their tender age, he granted them three days in which they were counseled to revert to their old faith, otherwise they would be put to death.  The seven youths took advantage of the situation and fled the city to conceal themselves in a cave in the mountains.  On the way a dog also followed them: they did their best to scare it away, but it would not leave them.  At last they found a cave as a suitable refuge and hid in it, and the dog sat at the entrance.  Being tired they soon fell into a deep slumber.  This happened in about 250 A.D.
